What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events. Someone with PTSD often relives the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, and may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt.

You may also have problems sleeping, such as insomnia, and find concentrating difficult. These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on day-to-day life.

You can find out more about PTSD, and get advice and support, from the NHS and South East London Mind.

“It truly was the right support at the right time"

Leo struggled with his mental health since childhood. "What made it worse was that my family didn’t understand – they're very old fashioned. They think that talking about your emotions is weak”.
